Introducing the New Lightning Rails Branding
From Validation to Vision: presenting Lightning Rails new branding by MariaBa

When Lightning Rails first launched, the goal was simple: provide solopreneurs and Rails devs with a fast, efficient way to build scalable applications using Ruby on Rails. To move quickly, I needed a logo just as fast. That’s where Marc Lou’s Logofa.st came in—it was a great way to get an identity in place and validate the idea without spending too much time on branding, it’s actually what I do with all my new apps.
But now, as Lightning Rails approaches 200 users, it’s time for something more. A strong, unique brand that not only reflects our values—speed, reliability, and developer-first simplicity—but also stands the test of time. That’s why we asked MariaBa, the design subscription service, to craft a new identity that truly represents what Lightning Rails is all about.
In this post, we’ll take you through the evolution of our branding, the decisions behind each element, and how it sets the stage for the future of Lightning Rails.
A Bold New Color Palette

In the early days, Lightning Rails rocked a neon #a6fd8d green alongside white—a combination that screamed early-stage MVP energy. It was fresh, unpolished, and, quite frankly, a bit flashy.
Enter the new color palette—a carefully curated selection designed to balance energy, trust, and Ruby on Rails colors:
Primary Chili Red 🌶️ – The boldest color in our palette, Chili Red represents passion, speed, and the fiery drive behind every Rails developer that builds with Lightning Rails.
Backgrounds White & Soft White ☁️ – A clean slate. White brings clarity and simplicity to our brand, keeping everything sleek and easy to navigate.
Secondary Blue 🔵 – A vibrant, electric blue that adds a modern, innovative edge to our visuals, embodying progress and creativity.
Neutral content Deep Blue 🌌 – A foundation of trust and stability. Deep Blue reflects the strength of the framework and the reliability that developers expect from Lightning Rails.
This new color scheme ensures a professional, high-contrast design that feels fresh yet enduring.
A Logo That Finally Makes Sense
Let’s talk about the old logo. It did the job, but let’s be real—it was a placeholder, something to slap on the header while I focused on building the actual product. But now, Lightning Rails deserves a proper visual identity, one that aligns with the name and core features.

Inspirations for the new Logo - MariaBA

From a circular train track to a bolt rails track mix!

We also got a custom font to match the roundness of the Logo ❤️
The new logo? It’s got rails and lightning—literally. The shape takes inspiration from train tracks, symbolizing structure, reliability, and movement, while also forming a lightning bolt, representing speed and power. It’s clean, modern, and instantly recognizable.

And Voila! The new Lightning Rails Logo
I wanted something that communicates exactly what Lightning Rails is about the second you see it. No more generic icons—this is a logo that tells a story. It blends the two key elements of the framework in a way that’s sleek, simple, and meaningful. Plus, it looks pretty cool on a hoodie. 😎
Up next, let’s see how this new branding fits into the real world—on websites, business cards, and even some swag!
